Iraqi Republican Guard Minifigure - United Bricks
The Republican Guard were the elite troops of the Iraqi army directly reporting to Saddam Hussein. They were better trained, disciplined, equipped, and paid more than ordinary Iraqi soldiers. Initially created as a presidential guard, the Guard was expanded significantly during the Iran-Iraq War to attempt to counter the Iranian advance into Iraqi territory. The Republican Guard saw extensive service during the invasion of Kuwait and the Persian Gulf War.
The Republican Guard had access to higher quality equipment than the Iraqi Army. Many supplies were purchased from European nations, or captured uniforms used, so there was a significant range of appearances for guardsmen. We have designed our minifigure as wearing DPM uniform purchased from the UK, and wearing British 58 pattern webbing (many were copied in other countries for purchase, such as Pakistan and China), using a South Korean made M80 helmet, and wielding an AKM that was sourced from the Eastern Bloc.
